Lanzarote: Perfect Mix of Beach and Culture

When the time came to book my summer vacay, I knew that I wanted a mix of beach and culture. Plus, at the beginning of this year I had made a vow to visit a couple of places that I had never been to before. My normal to go places in Spain were scorching hot this summer, so I decided to go to the Canary Islands which are known for their moderate temperature all year round. A friend recommended Lanzarote, and I thought: Why not?

Lanzarote – Some General Facts

Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, located off the northwest coast of Africa. It’s part of Spain and sits in the Atlantic Ocean, about 125 kilometers (78 miles) west of Morocco and 1000 kilometers of Spain. Known for its volcanic landscapes and warm climate, Lanzarote is a popular destination for tourists seeking both relaxation and adventure. When you see it for the first time, Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape feels like it’s straight out of a sci-fi movie: There are dramatic lava fields (Timanfaya National Park), sun-soaked beaches and quirky art installations by César Manrique. If you like a blend of natural modern vibrant culture and long, uncrowded beaches, Lanzarote should be up high on your travel must-goes!

Puerto del Carmen – My Home for Two Blissful Weeks

I stayed in Puerto del Carmen, a vibrant resort town on Lanzarote’s southeastern coast which known for its lively atmosphere and beautiful beaches. The town features a bustling promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and bars, offering a variety of dining and entertainment options.  I loved its golden sands and the clear blue waters. Sometimes, it truly felt Carribean. I was happy relaxing and people-watching on the beach, but there also were plenty of adventurous thrill-seekers going speed-boarding, paragliding and surfing.

Tips for Some More Active Days

Lazing on a beach is all good and well, but if you are like me, you will also feel a bit restless: After all, you are in a new destination and there’s plenty to explore! Here are some chill things to do around Puerto del Carmen! Minimum effort, maximum fun!

 1. Stroll to Playa de Los Pocillos

Embark on a delightful coastal stroll from Puerto del Carmen to Playa de Los Pocillos and soak up Lanzarote’s stunning scenery. The 4-5 Kilometer path meanders along the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, offering breathtaking views and a refreshing sea breeze. As you walk, you’ll pass charming coves and picturesque beaches, perfect for a quick dip or a sun-soaked pause.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife and vibrant marine life visible in the clear waters. You can also opt to walk along the promenade as well. The route is dotted with cafes and bars, so you can reward yourself with a cool drink or a tasty snack. The vibrant contrast of the golden sand and turquoise sea makes for fantastic photo ops. So be sure to capture every moment of this scenic adventure!

Bar Horizonte – It’s Coffee/Cocktail Time!

Once you arrive at your destination, look out for Bar Horizonte. Bar Horizonte. It’s a charming spot perched on a cliff with stunning panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, it’s a fantastic place to unwind with a refreshing drink or a meal. The menu features a variety of tasty options, from local specialties to international favorites, making it a great choice for casual dining or just a serene escape from the hustle and bustle. The staff is nice and goes all the way to provide an enjoyable experience for everyone. For example, we were dying for an iced coffee with milk. It wasn’t on their menu, but they made it for us, no problems. Plus, prices are very affordable!

Spoons – Lunch/Dinner Break With a View

On your way back to Puerto del Carmen, make sure to stop at Spoons, another great place with an elevated terrasse overlooking the ocean and modern, stylish decor. Spoons is a vibrant dining spot offering a wide range of dishes from hearty breakfasts to delicious dinners. We tried out their Chicken Fajitas and were not disappointed! The meal arrived in a sizzling hot pan and was very well flavored. 10/10, would recommend!

 2. Walk to the Old Town and the Port

Head into the opposite direction and walk along the water. You’ll soon find yourself at the port. This is where the old town of Puerto del Carmen is situated. We particularly enjoyed the blend of historical charm and vibrant maritime activity!

The Old Town of Puerto del Carmen exudes charm with its quaint, narrow streets and traditional Canarian architecture. Strolling through this historic area, you’ll find a delightful mix of local shops, cafes, and seafood restaurants, all overlooking the picturesque harbor. The port, with its bustling atmosphere, offers stunning views of the marina and the Atlantic Ocean, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely walk or a relaxing meal by the water.

Beers n’ Roses: The Perfect Place to Watch the Sunset!

We discovered this little gem right in the heart of all activity by the port and loved its laid-back vibe and friendly atmosphere. They have such a large selection of craft beers and bar classics. Inside seating is cozy, but we always enjoyed the outdoor seating with views of the marina and its lively surroundings. Plus, they have fantastic live rock music every night! What’s not to love?

 3. A Thrilling Half-Day Adventure: Timanfaya National Park

If you’re looking for a thrilling half-day adventure, Timanfaya National Park is a must-see! I’d recommend booking a guided bus tour, as the waiting line for individual travelers by car is usually devastatingly long! Plus, a guided bus tour allows you to take everything in in a relaxed fashion rather than having to concentrate on driving!

The volcanic wonderland of Timanfaya offers a unique glimpse into nature’s power. Your trip will take you through the park’s surreal landscape of craters and lava fields, where the barren, otherworldly scenery feels like stepping onto another planet. Witness geothermal demonstrations, such as steam geysers and scorching heat from the ground, showcasing the park’s ongoing volcanic activity. If you decide to visit the park’s restaurant, your food will be cooked solely through the scorching heat the ground provides. It’s pretty amazing to see!

For a touch of excitement, opt for a camel ride across the volcanic terrain for a truly unforgettable experience. The park’s volcanic origin makes for incredible photo opportunities, and the sheer scale of the landscape is awe-inspiring. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and take lots of pictures to capture the striking contrasts of black lava against bright, clear skies!

 4. Perfect Escape: Puerto Calero by Water Taxi

Another fun activity for those wanting to explore the surroundings of Puerto del Carmen is a short trip to Puerto Calero.

Puerto Calero is an elegant marina only 6 Kilometers away from Puerto del Carmen known for its upscale atmosphere and stunning coastal views. It has a very relaxed vibe and boasts a range of stylish boutiques, sophisticated restaurants, and waterfront cafes. It’s a great spot to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade, admire luxury yachts, or savor a meal with a sea view.

The nicest and most exciting way to get there is by water taxi from the marina in Puerto del Carmen. A round trip will cost you around  €18 and it will take you 20-25 minutes to get to Puerto Calero.  I’d recommend that you take the first water taxi there and arrive before the rest of the tourists. Then make your way to the lively market where you can browse local crafts, savor delicious snacks and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. Grab a drink or snack from one of the many waterfront cafés before you head back to Puerto del Carmen.

Finnegan’s in the Port

We decided to have some iced coffee at this awesome place right by the water. Lots of people decided to grab some late breakfast and we noticed they had lots of great breakfast options. Their lunch menu also looked promising. Prices were very affordable, the service friendly and the views outstanding.

Conclusion

Lanzarote has it all: Culture, beaches, beautiful landscapes. What’s even better: The island is not crowded at all! I feel like two weeks is the perfect amount of time to spend there. I know for sure that I will be coming back. Then, I want to do explore the North of the island some more!

But first, it’s time to go on a cruise to Norway! Norway has been on my bucket list for way too long. In the meantime, if you want to read about the Bahamas cruise I went on last summer, head over to my post here.
